Some Surprising Discoveries About the Housing Market in My Area
Recently I’ve been apartment hunting in Traverse City, Michigan.
Unless you’re living under a rock or with your parents (or perhaps in a home you bought before things went sideways that you could totally not afford to buy now), you’ve probably heard shit’s expensive these days.
That particularly applies to housing.
I truly don’t understand how people are paying for anything these days. My income isn’t as much as I’d like, but it’s way above minimum wage. And despite my privilege / earning potential, I would have to spend more than half of my monthly income on rent if I wanted an apartment in TC.
Thanks to the fact I now have a roommate, I’m able to move out of my teenage bedroom at my mom’s house.
The TL;DR
For those of you not on Reddit, TL;DR means “too long; didn’t read.” Usually the TL;DR goes at the bottom of a post (maybe not). Since this turned out to be rather lengthy and I believe in instant gratification, here are the two surprising things:
- Landlords aren’t evil
- The insane cost of housing in Traverse City is at least partially (if not largely) due to the insane cost of property taxes
