When I was in graduate school, I was reading — no joke — for 12 or more hours a day. The workload was way more than one human could possibly handle and to keep myself from going crazy, I developed a habit that also applies to working from home.

Instead of sitting in one place all day, trying to consume 5,000 pages of text, the only way I could stay focused was to change venues throughout the day.

I’m not sure if I had a pattern, but I rotated from my sun porch to the library, then to a coffee shop, then back home to the living room, maybe somewhere on campus, etc. I think that the walking (and sunshine!) was probably one of the things that helped keep my brain in shape.

Lucky for me, I was in New Orleans at the time. I went to Tulane, and aside from the occasional downpour that would soak you to the skin in the 8 minutes it took to run from one building to another and leave you shivering in the frigid A/C for the duration of class.

The climate definitely helped. This is on my mind as it’s winter in Michigan right now and I’d very much like to be in New Orleans. Or wherever there’s…
