Like people, businesses behave irrationally.

Everyone knows that meetings are (almost) always an expensive waste of time. Open workspaces kill productivity and your employees’ will to live. If your website plays music automatically, your visitors hate you.

Yet we continue to do things that we know are stupid. Why?

To be honest, I don’t know! Companies regularly engage in irrational behavior. They actively work against their own best interests. Often I’m not even sure most companies have any idea what their best interests are. Much disseminated this information to their employees.

My best guess? Businesses do irrational things because businesses are made up of people. And people, whether or not they’re willing to admit it, are highly irrational. Predictably irrational, even.

But of course, we refuse to admit it.

I can’t tell you why organizations, which should behave in perfectly rational ways (the goal is to stay in business, right?) but I can at least point out a few stupid things companies do. These are things that lead me to believe they’re actively trying to become the next Blockbuster.
